Power Quality

Power Intelligence manufactures the PIVO Transformer such that it will reduce voltage harmonics (THDV%). Depending on the site equipment there may be current and voltage harmonics present at the site. The PIVO unit will not increase these values.

Mitigation of harmonic voltages and currents is a specialised topic dependant very much on individual site conditions.  In our vast experience, we have encountered two types of onsite harmonic scenarios:

  1. If the site harmonic levels are low (voltage and/or current), there is no need to further decrease the levels.
  2. If the site harmonic levels are high (voltage and/or current), then we recommend that these addressed with a specific customised solution.

Problems associated with high levels of harmonics (voltage and/or current) include:

•    Overheating of electrical equipment such as cables, standby generators and electric motors
•    Premature failure or increased maintenance issues due to harmonic voltages and currents
•    Efficiency reduction of electrical equipment which increases power costs
•    Incorrect operation of protective devices and metering
•    Reduced power quality.

Power Intelligence recommends careful harmonic mitigation and harmonic measurement and analysis solutions in situations where the site harmonic values are suspected to be high. This process requires a separate harmonic measurement and analysis of the site, whereby  a site specific solution is recommended in order to reduce the harmonic distortion to an acceptable level. This is why, one solution will never fit all. Power Intelligence can assist in this process and undertake a power quality analysis investigation, report and recommendations.  A common solution for reducing high harmonic levels is a harmonic filter consisting of suitable chosen inductor, resistor and capacitor specifically sized and designed for the specific harmonic issues at the site (i.e. targeting specific harmonics like 3rd, 5th, 7th etc).

In summary, the Power Intelligence voltage optimisation PIVO transformer reduces energy consumption, maximum demand and carbon footprint as well as helping to improve power quality. With additional harmonic mitigation and power factor correction (if either is required) along with data logging and supply monitoring your site will function with optimum power quality and efficiency. A site specific analysis is required for the improvement of any existing site harmonics for maximum harmonic reduction.
